This week... (so far it rocks!)

Monday:
I went to la Autonoma to book a trip to Granada. That's right! This weekend I will be in Granada soaking in the sun and eating a lot of tapas.
Afterwards I hung out with a couple of friends from Art History while they ate their lunch on the grass. It was such a nice day! Later on I went to the Paseo de la Castellana and met up with Mar & Iván. We drank a coke and sat on a terrance analyzing the amazing weather.

Tuesday:
Today I went to the Natural Science Museum and
bought a book titled "Animalario Universal" by Profesor Revillod and ilustrations by Javier Sáez Castán. The book has illustrations of 21 animals all cut into three pieces so you can make new animals. I am easily amused, ok? You can form 4096 different species with it! Anyways the museum was not as nice as I thought it would be but it was worth the three euros. Also the building itself was amazing.

Later on at night I went out for tacos with Lily because we bought a Groupon discount at Entretacos but it was closed. No worries, we ended up having tacos anyways at a place a block from Entretacos called Tacos Chipotle. BEST TACOS OUTSIDE OF MEXICO!!! so so good. I thought I was in heaven for a bit. Then for dessert I had a torrija. Also today Real Madrid played and they won!

Wednesday:
The plans for today, for after I wake up are... visiting the Archeological Museum (free entrance!) and then I plan on watching the movie Tambien La Lluvia with Gael Garcia Bernal.

Lesson of the day:
Torrijas: typically made during Lent season. Made out of thick slices of bread that are soaked in milk or wine, dipped in egg, then fried and lastly drenched in honey or cinnamon sugar. They are somewhat similar to french toast, if french toast could fly! no I am kidding french toasts are good too.

I am just very satisfied with life at this very moment. Now I have to go wash the dishes.

Hola Madrid

Since I came back to Madrid I moved out of my old apartment in Moncloa and into a new one in La Latina. A younger, more authentic neighborhood in the very center of Madrid.

La Latina is called the most Spanish neighborhood of Madrid because if its architecture and the lifestyle here. At the center is the Cebada market where people do their grocery shopping. I live about two minutes from La Cebada. Sol, the center of all center is only eight minutes walking from my house.

I am very happy to back in Madrid and living in such a great neighborhood.

February

I spent February in Miami.

I went to Islands of Adventures and the Harry Potter theme park.

San Canuto

There I was, reading about the importance of the Olmeca culture as the mother of all Pre-Columbian cultures in the Mesoamerican region when all of the sudden I hear drums coming from the gardens of my university.

Turns out today is San Canuto, a day that celebrates Saint Canute, a Danish monarch that devotedly supported the Catholic Church. Nowadays the celebration has little to do with Saint Canute and the Catholic Church and more with a play of words because in Spanish canuto means a joint of the smoking kind.

Every year students, and others, gather around the gardens of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid to smoke, drink and be merry before they are swamp with exams. The day is also used as a promotion for the legalization of marihuana.

While I think the festival is a great idea as long as it doesn't cause damages to the university I was completely taken aback by it because I had no idea it was happening. Around six in the afternoon I went out to have a coffee thinking the drumming was coming from a small gathering but really there was a lot a of people, A LOT! I swear everyone and their mother was there but apparently it is because students of other universities come as well. According to some of my friends Autónoma de Madrid is the only university where the festival is celebrated in Madrid due to its autonomous status which allows the students to be undisturbed by the police as long as there are no phone calls from the university's dean.

By the time I got out of the library the party was pretty much dead. The celebration dies down by the time Renfe closes because there is no way back to the city after that unless you can drive. which means that by 11:30 the party was over.

I am obsessed!

There is almost nothing better in this world than a good plate of huevos rotos.

What are huevos rotos you ask? Thick cut fries, some sort of meat (chorizo, jamón serrano, or strips of beef), and fried eggs (runny yolk!) all stirred together to form the equivalent of heaven on earth.

When you break the eggs (thus huevos rotos) the yolk becomes the glue that allows you to pick up the potatoes and the meat all smothered on the precious gold yolk.

My gosh! I am obsessed!! It is my drug!!!

These are from La Cajita de Nori on Calle del Limón.

Being unproductive is my specialty.
- I got absolutely no school work accomplished this weekend.
- There is a long weekend coming up in three days and I haven't looked at flights so I can go somewhere.
-
My room is a mess and instead of picking it up I keep throwing things into a suitcase. I need to hide that suitcase and clear up my life.

This weekend I celebrated Thanksgiving with my roommates and a couple more friends. I made a mango and mint salad and some black beans, recipe borrowed from my mother and Nitza Villapol. We ate while watching the Masters Final between Nadal and Federer.

MAGIC

Alright, so Madrid might have no beach but when it comes to Christmas lights and displays it is the best, bar none. The decorations were turned on yesterday and will remain on until January 6th.

Despite the budget cut, an estimated 41% reduction, the city turned on its Christmas charm yesterday. I was going down Castellana when I saw all the trees lit up with LED light. It is estimated that the change to LED will reduce emissions, the energy bill, but they are increasing the total amount of hours that the lights will be on this season (230 hours).

Due to the cut the extravagant Paseo de los Arboles Navideños on Castellana is now gone. The city has only put up two Christmas trees, the one on Sol and another on Callao. This year El Corte Ingles' theme for Cortylandia is "Christmas round the world" and it features bears dressed in cute little traditional costume signing and dancing around. The Christmas market on Plaza Mayor will start Saturday.

January 5th is the famous Cabalgata de los Reyes.

this is the closest Corte Ingles to me, on Calle Princesa and Alberto Aguilera.

I am beyond excited!

November Weekend

Today I had Sistema de Información Geografico from 10:00am to 1:00pm. I woke up late so I got to the metro stop late but the metro was waiting there (how lucky! I thought) and waiting; turns out that one of the cars had a problem and we had to wait until it was fixed in order to leave the station. When I got to Renfe Cercanias, I was even more late than before so I got to school almost an hour after class had already started.

Tonight my roommates and I invited two friends (Mar & Iván) over for homemade sushi. I went shopping with Mar & Iván for the ingredients and once home, we cooked the rice and while we waited we made potstickers. Afterwards we all assembled rolls as Michael took pictures of everyone's mistakes.

Saturday night there is a free Julia Venegas' concert and I plan to be there first row.

Sunday will be to recover from the great Julieta Venegas concert I will experience today when nightfall come.

oh Madrid

I love Madrid but after two months of living here I finally noticed that there are some things missing to make it the best city in the whole-wide world.

1. LA PLAYA (the beach)
No matter what Madrileños say, the Rio Manzanares and the lake at Retiro do not make up for the lack of beach. Although this lack of humidity is doing wonders for my hair.
2. A Walgreens or CVS
Where else can I pick up my prescriptions and satisfy my need for a greeting card, a pack of gum, milk, and a lawn chair at four in the morning? Honestly I miss the convenience of the CVS and Walgreens.

Update

I must be the worst blogger on the history of the blogosphere but in my defense I have been very busy.

I have a flat, that I share with two wonderful roommates, on the Moncloa neighborhood about a 30 minute walk to Sol. I love the location and I like my room because it has a balcony. However the street is too noisy and the kitchen doesn't have an oven, well it does but it doesn't work. Terrible!

Since I last wrote I went to Avila, Salamanca, Segovia, and Zaragoza. I also ventured to Lisbon, Portugal for a weekend last month and it was great.

Lisbon, Portugal from This is Lisbon Hostel.
